On October 6, 2016, Governor Nathan Deal ordered a mandatory evacuation of Chatham, Bryan, Liberty, McIntosh, Glynn and Camden counties. The hurricane took less than 24 hours to pass over the coast of Georgia. St. Simons and Jekyll Islands had a one in 500 year storm surge event with a nine foot wall of water carrying 25 foot waves.
Jay Wiggins, Glynn County Emergency Manager, was tasked with leading the preparation for the impending disaster as well as the response and recovery. Glynn County is home to 80,000 people with 10,000 living on coastal islands in the county.
Mr. Wiggins will talk about the preparation, response, and recovery to the hurricane including what was done well and lessons learned for future emergencies.
