An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a small, portable device that analyzes the heart’s rhythm for any abnormalities and, if necessary, directs the rescuer to deliver an electrical shock to the heart of someone suffering from sudden cardiac arrest. This shock, called defibrillation, may help the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

The use of AED’s will be in compliance with the responsibilities and procedures outlined in this program and consistent with guidelines outlined by the State of Georgia.

What are the benefits of participating in the AED Program?
The UGA AED Program provides for standardization of AED units on campus, including purchasing, maintenance, testing, training and record keeping in order ensure consistency of use and a centralized database for record keeping.
What is the AED Oversight Committee?
The AED Oversight Committee will consist of representatives from the following departments or agencies: University Health Center; Office of Emergency Preparedness; UGA Police Department; UGA Risk Management Office; UGA Athletics; Environmental Safety Division; Recreational Sports Department; Facilities Management Division and the EMS provider for Athens-Clarke County. The UGA AED Oversight Committee will meet on an annual basis or more frequently if AED program guideline updates or incidents of AED use require additional meetings
Who is responsible for UGA AED Program?
OEP is responsible for campus AED program oversight and record keeping associated with the University of Georgia’s AED program.
What are the responsibilities of the AED Site Coordinator?
The AED Site Coordinator is responsible for implementing the AED program within their department or unit and serves as the primary contact for the AED(s) in their work area.
Who pays for the AED?
Requesting departments are financially responsible for the AED equipment purchase, alarmed storage box, signage, medical oversight, installation, and any maintenance according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Refer to the complete AED Program Guidelines.
How does a department purchase an AED?
The preferred AED package will be listed in the UGA MART Procurement program for the purchasing departments to access and order.
Do I need approval to purchase an AED?
Yes, OEP will ask if the AED Site Coordinator has obtained approval from the appropriate supervisor/dean/director as part of the request. OEP may contact the AED requestor’s supervisor to confirm the AED request.
How do I request an AED for my department/unit?
A department or unit interested in obtaining an AED for their building or area should contact Pete Golden, OEP Emergency Operations Coordinator, or (706) 542-7578 to submit their request.

The indicator light on my AED is blinking red or is not blinking at all. What should I do?
This usually indicates that the 9-volt battery housed in the main battery compartment needs to be replaced. If you have the Defibtech ReviveR AED, you need to push the button on the right side of the unit and eject the main battery. You will notice a separate battery compartment with a small slide out panel. Slide the small panel open, remove the 9-volt battery, and replace with a new 9-volt battery.
Once you complete the 9-volt battery replacement, if you do not see the green indicator light on the AED, please call Pete Golden, (706)542-7578, with the Office of Emergency Preparedness.
The AED pads, the overall AED unit battery (not the 9-volt battery) needs to be replaced or renewed?

We need CPR/AED training renewed for personnel whose certifications are nearing their expiration date. What are my options?
OEP coordinates a free CPR/AED training class every quarter. Pete Golden in OEP will send out class notifications to all AED Coordinators prior to the class. Please note that if you register for a OEP CPR/AED class, you must cancel 10 days prior to the class date if you anticipate a conflict or find a volunteer who will substitute in your department to take the class. Participants who do not adhere to these cancellation rules will be charged $40 for the class.

What do I need to do if I am no longer able to serve as an AED Coordinator for my building?
Please contact Pete Golden in the OEP office as soon as possible to allow him to identify another person in your department to replace you.
